Toys-R-Us Demolition Marks Phase I Salem Avenue Corridor Redevelopment

(Trotwood, Ohio, March 27, 2006) – The first phase of the City of Trotwood’s comprehensive retail redevelopment plan for its Salem Avenue Corridor began today with the demolition of the former Toys-R-Us site, 2424 Shiloh Springs Road.

A total of eight bids were received for the demolition, with Star Excavating of Covington, Ohio being the lowest and best bidder with a bid of $76,488.  Demolition of the Toys-R-Us site is slated for completion by early May 2006.

Built in 1985, Trotwood’s 45,094 square feet Toys-R-Us functioned as a toy, children’s clothing and accessories store.  City officials learned that the chain of toy stores was to be sold to development investors.  Due to uncertainty about the buyout company’s intentions, the City asked Toys-R-Us to separate the Trotwood location from the corporate buyout.  After months of negotiations, the City successfully acquired the property as part of its Salem Avenue Corridor Redevelopment initiative.

“One of the last things we need is another vacant, blighted eyesore in our community,” said Trotwood Mayor Donald K. McLaurin.  “This demolition officially marks the beginning of our redevelopment of the Salem Avenue Corridor.”

“Since the announcement of our acquisition, we have received tremendous interest in this particular site,” said Acting Economic Development Director Rhonda Finley.  “We are working on getting the site development ready beginning with the demolition phase.”

The Montgomery County Commissioners approved $136,000 in Economic Development/Government Equity grant funding to help with the project.  “We are grateful for the support of Montgomery County and others as we work to revitalize the Northwest corridor,” said City Manager Michael J. Lucking.
