Trotwood Breaks Ground For GM Parts Distribution Facility
(Trotwood, Ohio, Friday, December 14, 2007) – The City of Trotwood today hosted a groundbreaking for an official first-tier GM parts supplier’s new $32.5 million distribution facility being built here to house its operations and 250-300 new employees. City Council welcomed representatives of James Group of Ohio Logistics and its project team during this event attended by over 100 guests at the City’s industrial park, Trotwood Commerce Park.
James Group of Ohio Logistics will be responsible for packaging and shipping GM parts nationally and worldwide, and will take over operations formerly conducted by a Canadian firm. Construction will be completed by June 2008 on a fast track schedule to make the facility fully operational by July 2008.
James Group of Ohio Chairman & CEO John A. James said, “We’re pleased to be locating our major industrial operation in this fine community. The City has been extremely responsive to our needs, and thanks in large part to them this facility will be up and running by next summer.”
Private organizations involved in this $32.5 million public/private investment also feature facility developer/owner Corvus International, facility builder Oliver-Hatcher Construction and business customer The General Motors Corporation. Contributing public organizations include The City of Trotwood, Montgomery County ($500,000 ED/GE grant), The Ohio Rail Development Commission ($200,000 grant), and The Ohio Department of Development ($400,000 grant).
“This is a prime example of the public and private sectors coming together to bring more businesses and jobs to Ohio,” said Ohio Department of Development Regional Economic Development Director Kevin J. Carver. “In the process the City of Trotwood, Montgomery County and the State of Ohio have proven to be strong public partners.”
James Group Logistics will occupy a 380,000 square feet facility on a 50-acre site in Commerce Park, where gas, electric, storm and sanitary services are standard. In addition the City will be making rail spur improvements, expanding Commerce Park’s roadway and increasing its water/wastewater treatment capacity.
Said Trotwood Mayor Donald K. McLaurin, “This new facility will bring great benefits to our community. Its hundreds of prime jobs will help improve our local economy, its location will help us attract more industrial companies, and its tax revenues will help us deliver additional services to our citizens.”
The 250-300 new jobs that James Group of Ohio Logistics is bringing will come with an average annual salary of $30,000. Its over $9 million annual payroll is projected to yield the City of Trotwood over $200,000 annual income tax revenues, as well as nearly $800,000 a year in real and personal property tax revenues. Which means approximately $1 million a year in additional revenues for the City.
Responsible for securing the site and managing facility operations was James Group of Ohio, a subsidiary of James Group International, one of the nation’s 100 largest minority-owned service/industrial firms. Facility developer/owner Corvus International is responsible for preparing the site, overseeing the construction process and purchasing the new machinery and equipment for its operations.
“Trotwood is perfect for this facility,” said developer/owner Corvus International CEO Timothy Morris. “The City has done a remarkable job in bringing all these partners together to ensure its success.”
In terms of regional economic impact the new facility will help foster joint development benefits for the City of Dayton and other neighboring jurisdictions while helping increase development activity in Montgomery County.
According to Montgomery County Commission President Deborah A. Lieberman, “While bringing good jobs to the citizens of Trotwood, this facility will help attract more industrial firms and drive additional development to northwest Montgomery County.”
Its local economic impact includes substantial payroll income tax revenues for the City. It will help raise Trotwood’s property values and consequently the City’s 19% portion of local property tax revenues. The City strongly believes this facility will increase the number of support businesses looking to locate in Commerce Park or close by.
